Pentagon Contractor Swiped Money Orders

HOUSTON (CN) - A Texan who was postmaster for a military post office in Kuwait pleaded guilty to stealing $565,000 in money orders, federal prosecutors said.

Delmus Eugene Scott, 34, of Humble, pleaded guilty Friday to theft of government money. He faces up to 10 years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine at his April 19 sentencing.

Scott was a custodian of public effects, the equivalent of a postmaster in the United States. He worked for a Pentagon contractor that provided postal service to the U.S. military in Kuwait. He had the power to order blank money orders from the U.S. Postal Service.

He was indicted in July 2011 after investigators determined that he stole 565 postal money orders, each of them for $1,000, and 90 deposited into his bank account in Humble and 91 into his fiancee's bank account. Agents recovered the remaining $384,000 in postal money orders before they could be deposited.
