Pence Makes Stop at Burned-Out GOP Office

(CN) - Indiana Gov. Mike Pence stopped at the site of a firebombed North Carolina GOP office on Tuesday, calling what happened an "act of political terrorism."

The unscheduled stop at Orange County Republican headquarters as the vice presidential hopeful toured the battleground state came just days after someone threw a Molotov cocktail through a window at the office and spray-painted slogans calling the GOP "Nazis."

Pence, grim-faced at an impromptu press conference in front of the office, which is just outside Raleigh-Durham, condemned the incident as an "attack on our political system" and therefore, "an attack on us all."

He added: "We will not be intimidated."

North Carolina is considered a must-win state for the Trump campaign, because without a victory in the Tar Heel state, the Trump/Pence ticket has virtually no chance of securing the necessary 270 electoral votes needed to win the White House.

A CNN/ORC International poll released Monday has Clinton ahead by the slimmest of margins - just one point with the Democrat garnering the support of 48 percent of likely voters and Trump, 47 percent, with Libertarian Gary Johnson getting 4 percent.

The poll, conducted Oct. 10-15, has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percent.

After stopping at the burned out campaign office, Pence moved onto Wilmington, N.C., where he delivered recovery supplies to Hurricane Matthew victims.

He will headline a campaign rally in Fayetteville later on Tuesday.

The authorities are still investigating the firebombing, which happened during the pre-dawn hours of Sunday morning. They have not identified any suspects. No one was injured as the office was closed at the time of the incident.
