Pay up, Philip Morris

BOSTON — The Massachusetts Court of Appeals upheld a $5 million jury verdict against Philip Morris in a former smoker’s lawsuit seeking to hold the company and its Marlboro cigarettes responsible for causing his laryngeal cancer. It was not unreasonable for the jury to find that the man, who began smoking in his teens and continued for more than 50 years, may have heeded a warning on the cigarette boxes if one were given prior to July 1, 1969, the court ruled.
