BOSTON (CN) - New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was arrested today and charged with murdering his acquaintance Odin Lloyd on June 17.
Hernandez was ordered held without bail today at an arraignment in Attleboro, Mass. After he was arrested this morning, the Patriots announced that they had released him.
Hernandez, 23, a top tight end, had signed a $37.5 million 5-year contract with the Patriots, including a $12.5 million signing bonus; he has been paid $9.25 million of that.
Prosecutors said that video surveillance from more than one place recorded Hernandez in the hours before Odin was shot to death in an industrial park not far from Hernandez's home.
Hernandez was accompanied by two men, whose names prosecutors did not reveal, according to reports from wire service reporters who have been camped out at Hernandez's home for days.
Lloyd, 27, a semipro football player, apparently had quarreled with Hernandez three days before he was killed.
