LAS VEGAS (CN) - Clark County Court was flooded with medical malpractice lawsuits on Friday as patients suing the Endoscopy Center of Southern Nevada and other clinics for allegedly reusing syringes on patients scrambled to meet the one-year deadline to file. It is believed to be the state's largest class of medical malpractice cases, with at least 5,000 plaintiffs.
Last year, the Southern Nevada Health District urged more than 40,000 former patients of the clinic to get tested for hepatitis B and C and HIV after accusations surfaced that doctors and nurses reused syringes and vials of anesthesia on patients over a four-year period.
Meanwhile, Dr. Dipak Desi, the majority owner of the clinic, was ordered to undergo an independent physical by March 30 to determine if he is well enough to move through a pre-hearing and disciplinary hearing. His attorneys have maintained that he has still not fully recovered from a stroke in July.
The first case is scheduled for trial Oct. 19, with others continuing through January 2011, Judge Elizabeth Gonzalez told the Las Vegas Sun.
