Patent Complaint on Vehicle Snoopers

CHICAGO (CN) - Two foreign companies that created vehicle-tracking technologies say 11 U.S. companies have copied their systems, infringing on seven patents. The tracking systems can notify users if a vehicle is approaching, and can be programmed to indicate when the vehicles pass by as many as 1,000 preselected landmarks.

ArrivalStar of Luxembourg and Melvino Technologies of the British Virgin Islands say the defendants violated patents by offering features such as "GPS tracking of vehicles with geofence and landmarking functionality." In that one, a user can define landmarks and perimeters, and receive alerts "from mobile devices associated with vehicles."

The patented technologies allow users to receive updates on a vehicle's position and maps displaying its movement on cell phones, computers, fax machines and pagers. the information is conveyed through satellite networks, wireless modems and vehicle sensors. Some technologies can be used for hundreds of vehicles at once and a vehicle's device settings can be controlled remotely, according to the complaint. The technologies can also store vehicle tracking data.

Named as defendants are Alanco Technologies, Brickhouse Electronics, Fleet Management Solutions, Fleetmatics USA, Geomicro, GlobalTrack Services, Intergis, Numerex, Peak Wireless, Roper Industries, and Vehicle Tracking Solutions.

ArrivalStar and Melvino demand an injunction and damages for patent infringement.

Lead counsel is Anthony Dowell with Dowell Baker.
