Parents Sue Clinic Over Teen’s Abortion

ATLANTA (CN) - Parents say the Northside Women's Clinic violated state parental notification laws and gave their 16-year-old daughter an abortion without their knowledge or permission.

The girl's parents claim the clinic circumvented the law by a misleading statement on its Web site, and performed the abortion with a parent notification note from the boyfriend's mother.

According to the complaint in Fulton County Superior Court, the boyfriend's mom saw on the clinic Web site the statement: "unmarried patients under the age of 18 are required by Georgia State law to have a parent notification note on the day of surgery."

The boyfriend's mom wrote the note and took the girl to the clinic for the abortion, the complaint states.

But the girl's parents say that Georgia law requires a parent or guardian to be notified 24 hours before the abortion. They say they did not know about the abortion until after it was performed, and did not even know their daughter was pregnant.

The plaintiffs - the girl and her parents - are represented by S. Fenn Little with Little & Crumly.
