VANCOUVER, B.C. (CN) - Parents of a victim of Vancouver's burgeoning gang war sued the gang members they say carried out the hit. Eileen and Sunil Mohan say their son Chris inadvertently stumbled upon a gangland hit in the apartment across the hall from them in the Vancouver suburb of Surrey, and was killed for it.
Defendants Dennis Karbovanec, James Bacon, Cody Haevischer, Matthew Johnston and Michael Le plotted to kill a rival drug dealer, Corey Lal, who lived in the apartment where the murders took place, according to the complaint.
Karbovanec pleaded guilty in April to killing three of the six people who died in the "Surrey Six" killings in 2007. Karbovanec, 28, was sentenced to life in prison with no parole possible for 15 years.
Lal, 21, his brother Michael, 26; Ryan Bartolomeo, 19; and Edward Narong, 22, were killed inside the apartment, police said at the time. Mohan, 22, and Edward Schellenberg, 55, were killed for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
The Mohans filed the complaint pro se in B.C. Supreme Court.
