Parents Blame School for Son’s Suicide

OMAHA (CN) - Parents say their son sent three emails to a teacher at Creighton Preparatory School, with "unequivocal thoughts of suicide," and the teacher failed to warn his parents, the school or police. The boy hung himself the day after he sent the third email. The parents sued the school and the teacher for negligence and wrongful death.

The parents say their son sent his first email to the teacher on Nov. 9, 2009, "expressing unequivocal thoughts of suicide and asking for help in order to avert it."

They say he sent a similar email to the teacher of Dec. 8, 2009, and a third one, again "expressing unequivocal thoughts of suicide and asking for help," on Dec. 9.

The boy hanged himself on Dec. 10 and died the next day.

They say the teacher "was negligent in failing to warn the decedent's parents, other faculty and law enforcement of decedent's suicidal communications and need for intervention."

His parents seek damages for negligent infliction of emotional distress and wrongful death. They are represented in Douglas County Court by Martin Cannon of Crescent, Iowa.
