EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (CN) - A woman became paraplegic when her car slid under a tractor-trailer with a defective rear impact guard, she claims in Madison County Court.
Jessica Baker's 2001 Saturn slid under the back end of a Stoughton Trailer on Feb. 4, 2008. The trailer's rear impact guard had ¾-inch grade bolts, which failed government tests, instead of 1-inch bolts, which passed the tests, the complaint states.
Baker claims Stoughton knew before the accident that the 3/4-inch bolts had failed the tests. The defective design her Baker's car to slide under the trailer, causing the roof panel to come down on her, lacerate her head and break her spine.
Baker seeks unspecified damages and is represented by Wilbur Tomlinson of St. Louis.
Named as defendants along with Stoughton are Motor City Express, Challenger Motor Freight, James Group International, James Group Midwest, STI Holdings, Air Products and Chemicals and four individuals.
