Palm Beach Schools Face Class Action

PALM BEACH (CN) - A class-action complaint accuses Palm Beach County School District of unconstitutionally denying 175,000 students an adequate education. Plaintiffs claim the district's 69.9% graduation record in 2004 is significantly below the national average.

(This claim in Palm Beach County Court may be complicated by the open secret among school districts nationwide that public schools keep two sets of books on dropout rates, one to report to the federal government, and another one closer to reality.

(The U.S. Education Department has announced changes to its No Child Left Behind Act that acknowledges this, The New York Times reported today.)
