Packaging Defect Leads to Recall of Baby Food

(CN) - Gerber said Thursday that it is recalling four batches of organic baby food because a packaging defect could cause product spoilage during transport and handling.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) posted the company's announcement, which applies to some of its Organic 2nd Foods pouches.

The pears, carrots and peas flavor of 2nd Foods pouches with best-by dates of July 12 and 13, 2016, batch codes of 51945335XX and 51955335XX, and 15000074319 for a UPC code have been voluntarily recalled by Gerber.

The baby food giant also recalled the carrots, apples and mangoes 2nd Foods pouches with a UPC code of 15000074395, best-by dates of July 13 and 14, 2016, and batch codes 51955335XX and 51965335XX.

"Consumers may notice that, in some cases, the pouches are bloated and product inside may have an off taste or odor," Gerber's announcement states.

Batch codes and best-by dates can be found on the bottom of the back side of the baby food pouches. UPC codes are located on the package's barcode.

Gerber said it is "working to retrieve from retailers and online stores the remaining pouches from the four affected batches."

The company said it is offering replacement coupons for customers who bought the recalled products.

Three consumer reports of temporary gastrointestinal symptoms have not been definitely linked to the baby food, Gerber said.
