Overcrowded jail

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A federal court in Alabama denied summary judgment to Tuscaloosa County on a state-law claim for the wrongful death of a man sentenced to 30 days in jail on allegations that overcrowding played a role in his fatal altercation with another inmate. Testimony by a corrections expert creates a genuine issue of material fact as to whether the county jail was “of sufficient size” and whether overcrowding played a role in causing the inmate’s death.
