Overbooked Planes

WASHINGTON (CN) - Airlines overbook flights and have to bump passengers with confirmed reservations at times, and they must post signs saying so, according to a new Transportation Department regulation for carriers with planes seating 30 to 60 passengers.

The signs include that the airline first must ask for volunteers to abandon seats before kicking anyone off the flight involuntarily, that an involuntarily bumped consumer must be compensated, and that each airline's lists of how to choose who to take off the flight and the amount those people may be compensated are available at all airport ticket counters and boarding locations.

If the airline arranges transportation so the traveler is scheduled to arrive less than two hours after his or her originally scheduled time, the compensation is the same amount as the fare to get the passenger to that stop, and is due at the time the person is denied boarding. Airline tickets instead of cash or check may be offered as compensation as long as the airline tells the consumer all limitations at the time.
