PORTLAND, Ore. (CN) - The Society of Jesus, Oregon Province filed for bankruptcy, listing $4.8 million in assets and $61.8 million in debts. The Jesuits listed 17 creditors by initials only, indicating they were victims of priestly abuse. The Jesuits insists that their colleges, including Gonzaga and Seattle Universities, are separately incorporated and thus not at risk, but victims' attorneys disagree.
The Jesuits' Oregon Province includes Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Idaho and Montana.
