MANHATTAN (CN) - A U.S. Army chief warrant officer took thousands of dollars in bribes to help a man steal tanker truckloads of gas from an Army fuel depot in Baghdad, federal prosecutors say.
The superseding indictment claims Chief Warrant Officer Joseph Crenshaw helped Harith Al-Jabawi steal truckloads of gas from Camp Liberty, from April to August 2007. Prosecutors claim Crenshaw was paid "several thousand dollars" for each truckload of gas he helped Al-Jabawi steal.
Al-Jabawi, 36, of the Bronx, was arrested Sunday at JFK Airport.
Both men are charged with conspiring to bribe a public official. Al-Jabawi also is charged with making false statements to gain access to a U.S. military installation. Each count is punishable by up to 5 years in prison and a fine of $250,000 or twice the amount of money gained by the offense.
