One Dead in Random Shooting in Tennessee

(CN) — An East Tennessee newspaper carrier was killed Thursday morning in what law enforcement authorities call a random shooting in a city near the Virginia border.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. Thursday on Volunteer Parkway in Bristol, Tenn., near a hotel and auto parts store, according to local news reports.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said one person was killed and four others, including a police officer, were injured. The woman who was killed was a local newspaper carrier, WJHL reported.

The shooter was armed with two guns and was firing shots at a Days Inn and along Volunteer Parkway, according to law enforcement. A shootout reportedly ensued when police arrived on the scene. The gunman is said to have been shot during the incident.

The suspect and victims were taken to Bristol Regional Medical Center, according to WJHL.

TBI said it will not name the suspect or victims until its investigation is complete.

Investigators have not determined the shooter's motive.

The Bristol Herald-Courier said Thursday that its carrier, 44-year-old Jennifer Brewer Rooney, was killed in the shooting. The newspaper said she was shot when she was traveling to pick up papers, and her vehicle careened over an embankment.

Rooney had been delivering newspapers for the Herald-Courier since August.
