One Dead, Four Injured, in Texas Shooting

(CN) - A man headed to court with family members opened fire outside a Beaumont, Texas, courthouse Wednesday, killing one and injuring three others, media outlets have reported.

Authorities have yet to identify the suspect, but they told the Associated Press he is currently hospitalized for injuries he suffered during the incident.

The shooting, outside the Jefferson County Courthouse, was part of a hostage situation, Jefferson County sheriff's deputy Rod Carroll told ABC News.

A county employee told ABC News the victims were not courthouse employees.

While trying to escape, the suspect hit a final victim with his truck, Beaumont police officer Doug Kibodeaux told the Associated Press.

Officers took the suspect into custody after he drove three or four blocks, and abandoned his truck in the middle of the street, Kibodeaux told the AP.

Kibodeaux could not say if any victims were related to the suspect, ABC News reported.

Neither the courthouse nor Kibodeaux responded to calls for comment from Courthouse News.

The AP reported that court personnel were locked down in the courthouse after the shooting.

Beaumont, with a population of 118,296 in 2010, is 70 miles southeast of Houston and fewer than 40 miles from Louisiana.
