PROVIDENCE, R.I. (CN) - Massachusetts-based Indoor Air Care Corporation preyed on an elderly woman with cancer and Alzheimer's by promising to clean her home's air ducts for $49, then jacking the price up to $189, and finally charging her more than $2,000, the woman's attorney claims in Superior Court.
Indoor Air Care, of Hyde Park, Mass., advertised that it "would clean duct work for $49.95, with 10 percent off for senior citizens," according to the complaint. "This advertisement represented that the services would include '10 vents, 1 return and 1 main.'"
Sandra Snow, 67, who has lung cancer and Alzheimer's, and her 72-year-old husband responded to the ad, and were quoted a price of $189 to clean 10 vents in their "small home," the complaint states.
But the company's "supervisor on the job kept coming back and forth to Mrs. Snow, purporting to point out 'extras' and additional items that allegedly needed to be done. When all was said and done, Mrs. Snow was presented with a bill with a total of $2,015.01, some 40 times in excess of the flyer price advertised," according to the complaint.
The bill included charges of "$815.80 for additional 'mains' that did not exist," the complaint states.
The Snows seek punitive damages for fraud, deceptive trade and breach of contract. They are represented by William Hardman of Warwick, R.I.
