Oil Firm Reaches $1.6M Settlement with EPA

(CN) - Superior Crude Gathering Inc. agreed to pay a $1.61 million to settle charges related to a 2010 crude oil spill from tanks at the company's oil storage facility in Ingleside, Texas.

In a complaint filed in conjunction with the filing of the consent decree, the U.S. Justice Department and the Environmental Protection Agency say Superior discharged at least 2,200 barrels of crude oil in violation of Section 311 of the Clean Water Act.

The oil discharged from two tanks at the facility on Feb. 9 and 10, 2010, the equivalent of 92,400 gallons of crude oil flowed into an unnamed lake and wetlands near the Intracoastal Waterway and Redfish Bay.

The complaint also includes alleged related violations of the Clean Water Act's spill prevention, control, and countermeasure regulations and spill response plan regulations.Superior Crude already paid to clean up the spill and repair the damaged tanks. It has since discontinued operations at the facility.
