CINCINNATI (CN) - A Cincinnati nursing school took thousands of dollars from students through unconscionable, misleading statements, then closed before the students could finish the course or take the nursing exam, the Ohio Attorney General says. The state sued the Tri-State Medical Academy aka Gates Academy of Nursing and its owner, Gary Terry, in Hamilton County Court.
Terry told his victims it would cost them $12,106 to complete the Licensed Practical Nurse program, $9,900 of it for tuition and the rest for fees and supplies, according to the complaint. But the school closed just 5 months after it got full approval for its LPN program, and never was licensed by the Ohio Career Colleges and School Board, Attorney General Richard Cordray says.
At least six of the bamboozled students then had to enroll at a different school and "become indebted in the sum of $22,886 in order to obtain a certificate of completion to take the LPN exam."
It is unclear from the complaint if the $22,886 is new debt, or cumulative debt.
Gates shut down his school on Oct. 8, 2009. The Ohio Board of Nursing had given it conditional approval on Nov. 15, 2007, and full approval on May 14, 2009.
The State of Ohio, the only plaintiff in the case, seeks reimbursement, damages and an injunction.
