SEATTLE (CN) — President Obama appointed two women to fill vacant seats on the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington, and a man to a seat that will become vacant in June.
The president on Thursday appointed King County Superior Court Judge Beth Andrus to the seat vacated by Judge Robert Lasnik on Jan. 27, when he assumed senior status.
He appointed Seattle attorney Kathleen O'Sullivan to the seat vacated by Judge Marsha Pechman on Feb. 6, when she assumed senior status.
He appointed Assistant U.S. Attorney J. Michael Diaz to the seat that will open up on June 28 when Judge James Robart assumes senior status.
Andrus has been on the King County bench since 2010. She is its chief civil judge and was assistant presiding judge in 2015. She received her bachelor's degree from Wayne State University in 1985 and her J.D. from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1988. She was in private practice in Seattle from 1989 until 2010.
O'Sullivan received her bachelor's degree from Yale University in 1991 and her J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center in 1996. She joined Perkins Coie's Seattle office in 1997 and was made a partner in 2004.
Diaz has been in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Washington since 2008, where he has been the civil rights coordinator since 2011. He received his bachelor's degree from Notre Dame in 1996 and his J.D. from Cornell Law School in 2002. She was in private practice in Seattle from 1989 until 2010. He was in private practice with Fulbright & Jaworski in Houston from 2002 to 2006 and with Yarmuth Wilsdon in Seattle from 2006 to 2008.
The U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington has seven judgeships, two of them vacant. It handled 3,925 new cases filings in fiscal year 2015.
