Obama OKs Computers for|Sudan Independence Vote

WASHINGTON (CN) - President Obama has temporarily waived trade sanctions and export restrictions imposed on Sudan, to allow the export of computers and related equipment for the United Nations to use to facilitate an independence referendum in southern Sudan.

The restrictions had been imposed under the Trade Sanctions Reform and Export Enhancement Act.

The referendum is part of the 2005 Naivasha Agreement between the Sudan People's Liberation Movement and the government of the Sudan that ended the most recent civil war in that nation.

The referendum on independence, to be held in January, will determine whether the southern most part of the country will break free. Other referenda, in territories bordering what would become South Sudan and the north, will be held if the independence referendum passes.
