WASHINGTON (CN) – President Obama has extended former President George W. Bush’s executive order granting the president control of exports for national security reasons, under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.
Executive Order 13222 declared a national emergency with respect to the threat posed to national security, foreign policy and economy of the U.S. after the Export Administration Act of 1979 expired. The act had provided authority to regulate dual use exports-items with legitimate trade purposes that also may be used to threaten the interests of the U.S. and its allies.
The act was intended to prevent the illicit of use of U.S. goods in the manufacture of drugs, arms, weapons of mass destruction, or other uses that could undermine security.
The executive order is extended for a year.
