Obama Formally Endorses Clinton for President

(CN) - President Barack Obama on Thursday formally endorsed Hillary Clinton as his successor, just hours after meeting with Sen. Bernie Sanders at the White House.

The president released his endorsement online shortly after 2 p.m., the video being circulated by the Clinton campaign.

In the video, the president calls on Democrats to unify behind his former secretary of state and "build on the progress" of his presidency.

"I don't think there's ever been anyone so qualified to hold this office," the president says.

"I'm with her. I am fired up and I cannot wait to get out there and campaign for Hillary," he adds.

Moments after the endorsement, the Clinton campaign said the president and the presumptive Democratic nominee will campaign together in Green Bay, Wis. on June 15.

The latest developments in the 2016 presidential campaign came just hours after the president met with Clinton's rival for the Democratic nomination.

Michael Briggs, a spokesman for Sanders, said he requested the meeting with Obama because he was "interested in his input."

Briggs said Sanders considers Obama to be "one of the smartest people he knows" and was happy to receive his counsel during the hour-long meeting.

Sanders was meeting later Thursday with Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid of Nevada and his successor, Charles Schumer of New York. Sanders is also scheduled to meet with Vice President Joe Biden at the Naval Observatory later in the day.
