WASHINGTON (CN) - President Barack Obama extended for one year the state of national emergency blocking the property of former members of the regime of Liberian ex-president Charles Taylor.
The block was imposed by former President George W. Bush in an executive order in July 2004.
Thursday, Taylor appealed his April war crimes conviction before the Special Court for Sierra Leone in the Hague, Netherlands.
In a notice announcing his decision, Obama said members of Taylor's deposed regime still pose a threat to democracy in Liberia and to the foreign policy interests of the United States.
Taylor was sentenced in May to 50 years in prison for aiding and abetting atrocities in the civil war in neighboring Sierra Leone.
