Obama Creates Task Force on ‘Clean Coal’ Technology

WASHINGTON (CN) - President Obama has ordered the creation of a task force aimed at speeding up the development and implementation of "clean coal" technology.

In its first year, the Obama administration launched a number of efforts to help private firms develop carbon-capture technologies, including reviews by the Department of the Interior and the Department of Energy to determine the nation's geologic capacity to store carbon dioxide, and promotional efforts to build demonstration projects on public lands.

The Environmental Protection Agency is also developing regulations to address the safety, efficacy and environmental soundness of injecting and storing carbon dioxide under ground.

In a memo to his cabinet, Obama said the task force will develop a plan, within 180 days, to address the barriers to the widespread, cost-effective deployment of carbon capture and storage within 10 years.

Obama said the goal is to build five to 10 demonstration projects by 2016.
