WASHINGTON (CN) - President Obama has created the Richard C. Holbrooke Award for Diplomacy to be awarded annually to up to five individuals or groups the Secretary of State has determined have made "especially meritorious contributions to diplomacy."
The award is named after Ambassador Richard Holbrooke who died on Dec. 13 after suffering an aortic dissection.
Holbrooke was most well known for negotiating the Dayton Peace Accords that brought an end to the Bosnian civil war. During his time in the diplomatic corps, Holbrooke served as Assistant Secretary of State in two different administrations, Ambassador to Germany, the United Nations and Special Envoy to the Balkans, and most recently to Pakistan and Afghanistan.
