NYPD Officer Gets Light Sentence

MANHATTAN (CN) - A former New York City police officer was given a light sentence for conspiring to rob drug dealers. Miguel Burgos gave a police scanner and a hydraulic pump to break through doors to a violent gang of robbers who committed "hundreds of home invasion robberies of suspected drug dealers," federal prosecutors said.

Burgos, 34, was sentenced on Friday to 15 months in federal prison. A jury convicted him in October after a 5-day trial.

In February 2008, Burgos bought a Hydra-Ram II hydraulic pump, which police and firefighters use to break down doors in emergencies, and gave it to the leader of a "violent robbery crew," the U.S. Attorney's Office said in announcing the sentence.

"The pump, which cost nearly $2,000, was used by the robbery crew to commit nearly a dozen robberies and burglaries of drug dealers, suspected drug dealers, and the locations in which they stored their drugs and drug proceeds. Burgos also gave the crew a police scanner in 2008," according to the U.S. Attorney.

Burgos grew up with one of the robbers, who stole more than $1 million from 2001 to 2008, prosecutors said. "Members of the crew used the money to buy dozens of luxury vehicles, including BMWs, Mercedes Benzes, Porsches, and Lexuses, as well as numerous properties in the Dominican Republic."

Burgos declined an invitation to join the gang, but he "readily agreed" to help them by buying them the pump and giving them the scanner, prosecutors said.

Burgos became a cop in July 2004.
