MANHATTAN (CN) - A New York Police sergeant gave secret information from a federal terrorist watch list to someone to use in a child-custody dispute, federal prosecutors say. NYPD Sgt. Haytham Khalil was arrested on Thursday.
Khalil, 34, of Brooklyn was arrested after the Canadian Mounties informed the FBI that an agent had found a Canadian citizen with a document containing information from the FBI National Crime Information Center. The NCIC contains information from the FBI's "Terrorist Screening Center," the so-called terrorist watch list.
The NCIC document was found to have come from an NYPD computer, the U.S. Attorney's Office said. NYPD internal affairs investigators say Khalil got the document.
"Individual 1," whom the Mounties found with the document, allegedly told the FBI that he or she knows Khalil, and that Khalil sent him or her the document to use against "Individual 2," the other party to the child custody dispute. Individual 1 gave the document to his or her attorney to be used in the custody fight, prosecutors say.
If convicted of using the computer without authorization to get the restricted information, Khalil faces up to a year in prison and a fine of $100,000.
