NYCLU Sues County for Ad Policy

CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (CN) - The New York Civil Liberties Union sued Suffolk County, demanding records on its ad policy for county buses. The country rejected an ad in favor of homosexual marriage, but accepted an ad from an anti-abortion group, the NYCLU claims in Suffolk County Court.

The NYCLU claims the county attorney told it Suffolk County has "a long-standing policy of not accepting politics ads on its buses," but the civil liberties group contests that. It claims the county accepted an ad from Birthright, an anti-abortion group, but rejected an ad from a gay rights group, that would have said: "Support Marriage Equality / Everybody should be able to marry the one they love / Call your state senator."

The NYCLU claims that county attorney said the two ads were different because "Birthright's does not include the term 'abortion' while the LGBT group's ad contained the word 'marriage.'"The NYCLU calls that a "murky First Amendment" claim. It wants to see the county's ad policies.
