WASHINGTON (CN) - The export and import of certain radioactive materials will no longer require a specialized use license, under regulations adopted by the Department of Energy.
The change to requiring only a general license follows a series of increased security measures the department put in place after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 regarding possession of small amounts of radioactive source and waste material.
Under those changes, the possession of radioactive material requires an FBI fingerprint and criminal background check, and requires a level of scrutiny from the department greater than that required under the old import-export regime. As a result, the department determined that the special license requirement was redundant.
