Nuclear Security

A national system to track sources of radiation was supposed to be in place by November, but the computerized database is not finished or tested, so the United States will remain in the dark about the movements of irradiated sources for another year.

Those licensed to handle materials most likely to cause harm to people were to put initial inventory information into the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's National Source Tracking System, and then report when anything was transferred elsewhere. The compliance date now is Jan. 31, 2009. Click here for details and other new regulations.
