(CN) - The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is taking steps towards revising its emergency response plans in light of the aftereffects of the 2011 nuclear disaster at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant in Japan.
The commission issued a draft regulatory basis document on the capabilities of nuclear plants to respond to emergencies.
The action stems from the NRC's "lessons-learned efforts associated with the March 2011 Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident in Japan," the NRC wrote.
Following the nuclear disaster, the NRC formed a task force to address safety issues within the nuclear industry. Last November, the NRC held a public meeting to discuss implementing one of the task force's recommendations.
Recommendation 8 involves "strengthening and integration of onsite emergency response capabilities such as emergency operating procedures, severe accident management guidelines, and the extensive damage mitigation guidelines," according to a summary of the meeting.
On Tuesday, the NRC announced that it is making its preliminary documents publicly available on regulations.gov, the federal rulemaking website.
The NRC seeks public comments on the preliminary proposed rule and draft document by February 22.
