Nuclear Industry Seeks|to Stop Waste Fees

WASHINGTON (CN) - The Nuclear Energy Institute wants to stop the Department of Energy from collecting $750 million a year for its $24 billion nuclear waste fund, to create long-term waste storage options. The nuclear industry's chief lobbyist said the fees should be stopped because the Obama administration pulled the plug on plans to develop the Yucca Mountain storage facility in Nevada.

NEI wants the court to direct energy officials to stop collecting the one-tenth of a cent per kilowatt-hour surcharge that customers pay on their monthly electric bills.

NEI says it filed its papers with the D.C. Circuit, and is joined by Florida Power & Light Co.; NexEra Energy Seabrook; NexEra Energy Duane Arnold; NexEra Energy Point Beach ; Omaha Public Power District; PSEG Nuclear; Indiana Michigan Power; Energy Northwest; PPL Susquehanna; The Detroit Edison Co. ; Nebraska Public Power District; Northern States Power Co.; Kansas Electric Power Cooperative; and Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Corp.
