Norton Simon Museum Can Keep Its Allegedly Looted Art

LOS ANGELES (CN) - A federal judge has granted the Norton Simon Museum of Art's request to dismiss the claim of Marei von Saher, who says the museum in Pasadena is displaying two 16th century oil paintings by Lucas Cranach the Elder that the museum acquired, indirectly, through Nazi looting. The museum bought "Adam" and "Eve," an oil-on-wood diptych, from George Stroganoff-Scherbatoff in 1971 and has displayed them continuously since 1979.

Von Saher claims Stroganoff got the art from Nazi looters, who stole it from her ancestor, Jacques Goudstikker. She claims to be his sole living descendant. Citing the three-year statute of limitations, U.S. District Judge John Walter reluctantly dismisses the claim. See ruling.
