WASHINGTON (CN) - Cruise ships with more than 250 berths will be forbidden from discharging any waste water or sewage while passing through the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary according to proposed National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration regulations.
Currently, cruise ships are allowed to discharge graywater collected from galley and bathing areas and treated sewage.
Cruise ships crossing the sanctuary in 2009 may have released up to 1.3 million gallons of treated sewage and q.5 to 5 million gallons of wastewater, the agency estimates.
