No More Maserati

HOUSTON (CN) – A Tanzanian man who stole 600 people’s Social Security numbers and used them to file fraudulent tax returns faces up to 24 years in federal prison – and will have to give up his Maserati.
Amon Rweyemamu Mtaza, 38, of Houston, pleaded guilty Tuesday to wire fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud and two counts of aggravated identity theft.
Mtaza’s scheme led the federal government to pay him more than $1.8 million in tax refunds, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.
U.S. District Judge Gray Miller accepted Mtaza’s plea and set his sentencing for Jan. 15, 2015.
Miller also ordered Mtaza to forfeit a Maserati and a Mercedes Benz.
