No Jail for Threatening a Judge

BELLEVILLE, Ill. (CN) - The former chairman of the St. Clair County Republican Party pleaded guilty to threatening a judge.

Richard M. Swing, 54, was sentenced to 24 months of conditional discharge, must complete a mental health treatment, pay court costs, and was ordered to stay away from St. Clair Circuit Judge Stephen McGlynn and his family.

A felony charge of intimidation was dropped for Swing's plea of disorderly conduct.

Police said Swing harassed and threatened McGlynn.

Swing was the St. Clair County Republican chairman in 2008, but later switched to the Constitution Party.

McGlynn is also a former chairman of the St. Clair County GOP. He was appointed a state circuit judge in 2010 and is running for a spot on Illinois' Appellate Court.
