No ‘Independence Party’ for Jim Walden

BROOKLYN — A federal court in New York declined to issue a preliminary injunction to Jim Walden, who is running in the NYC mayoral election as an independent, that would have allowed him to establish the name of his political party as the “Independence Party.” The court upholds a state election law prohibiting political parties from using the words “independent” or “independence” in their names because voters experienced problems registering as independent, unaffiliated voters when they enrolled in the since-disbanded Independence Party, which existed from 1991 to 2020.
