FERGUSON, Mo. (CN) - It could take until late November for a grand jury to decide whether to charge Ferguson police Officer Darren Wilson in the shooting death of Michael Brown, St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Bob McCulloch said Sunday.
Wilson, who is white, shot Brown, an unarmed 18-year-old black man, on Aug. 9. The shooting sparked almost two months of ongoing sometimes violent protests in the north St. Louis County suburb.
McCulloch appeared Sunday on KSDK-TV, St. Louis' NBC affiliate, and said it is taking the grand jury longer because of the amount of evidence.
"Instead of the lead officer, lead investigator coming in and testifying as to everything that went on in the investigation, the actual witnesses are coming in," McCulloch said. "So there won't be any dispute about whether the witness said this and the officer interpreted that or what the witness said, so that testimony will all be there."
As McCulloch spoke, a manhunt continued for the shooter of a Ferguson police officer late Saturday night.
Police said the male officer spotted a male suspect behind the Ferguson Community Center during a business check. The suspect opened fire and shot the officer in the arm. It is not clear whether the incident is linked to the protests, which have turned testy this week after about a month of relative calm.
On Sunday, KSDK reported that at least five more protesters were arrested in front of the Ferguson Police Department.
