No Free Pass For Nuclear Weapons Plant,|Environmental Groups Tell Energy Secretary

WASHINGTON (CN) - Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman is moving a nuclear weapons-making plant in Kansas City, Mo., to another site near the city limits without cleaning up the old site, where it has made nuclear weapons for more than 50 years, environmental groups claim in Federal Court.

Lead plaintiff the Natural Resources Defense Council says the nuke plant contaminated groundwater, but the Energy Department and its creature, the national Nuclear Security Administration, are moving the plant to a new site, called the Botts Road Site, without the legally required environmental impact reports on both sites.

The plant makes non-nuclear components, which constitute 85% of the weapons, the plaintiffs say.

Joining the NRDC as plaintiffs are Physicians for Social Responsibility, Nuclear Watch New Mexico, Tri-Valley CAREs (Communities Against a Radioactive Environment), Ann Suellentrop, Dr. Yolanda Huet-Vaughn, M.D., and Henry and Jane Stoever.

Plaintiffs are represented by Howard Crystal with Meyer Glitzenstein & Crystal.
