No closed trial for lottery winner

PORTLAND, Maine — A father who won the Maine State Lottery is not entitled to a closed trial or to proceed anonymously in his lawsuit accusing the mother of his child of violating their non-disclosure agreement by telling others about his lottery win. A federal judge ruled that the father’s wealth alone is not a sufficient reason to restrict the right of public access to civil proceedings, and allowing him to proceed under a pseudonym just because he is now rich would open the door for others, such as prominent entertainers and successful entrepreneurs, to do the same.
