No Civil War Coming|to Texas After All

LUBBOCK (CN) - Lubbock County Judge Tom Head can relax - the United Nations says it has no plans to invade Texas if President Barack Obama is re-elected.

Head made headlines last week when he asked county voters to support a tax increase to fund seven more sheriff's deputies for a "civil war" he anticipates if Obama turns U.S. sovereignty over to the U.N.

But when asked Friday if the United Nations has plans to invade Texas, Martin Nesirky, spokesman for U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, said. "It's absolutely ridiculous."

Nesirsky, obviously an astute reader of highway signs, told Reuters: "No one, not even the United Nations, would ever mess with Texas."

Head had predicted that if Obama were re-elected, the public would revolt, and Obama would send in the U.N. troops.

"I don't want 'em in Lubbock County, OK?" Head said. "So I'm going to stand in front of their armored personnel carrier and say, 'You're not coming in here.'

"And the sheriff, I've already asked him, I said, 'You gonna back me?' He said, 'Yeah, I'll back you.' Well, I don't want a bunch of rookies back there. I want trained, equipped, seasoned veteran officers to back me."

A county judge in Texas is not a judicial officer. The county judge, an elected office, is head of the County Commission.

Texas has 254 counties, the newest of which, Loving, was created in 1893, abolished in 1897, then re-established in 1931. Loving County was not dissolved because of questions of national and international jurisdiction, but because it had no towns and only about 3 people lived there. Its 2010 Census population of 82 makes it the least populous county in the United States.

Mighty Lubbock County, pop. 278,831, is named after Thomas Lubbock, a colonel in the Confederate Army. The county population is 74.3 percent white. Lubbock's area of 899 square miles includes 1 square mile of water.
