WASHINGTON (CN) – To keep mature lobsters breeding along the Atlantic Coast, the National Marine Fisheries Service has limited catches to the smaller ones, with carapaces of 5.25 inches or less in most of the fishery’s zones.
The agency also will require Atlantic Coast lobster dealers to provide weekly electronic reports detailing each trip’s catch, starting in 2010. The report is to include overall weight of the catch, and each lobster’s size. The agency states that it hopes the data will help it better understand the condition of the lobster fishery.
