WASHINGTON (CN) - The National Marine Fisheries Service is permanently banning nighttime use of medium mesh gillnets off the coast of North Carolina from November through April.

The move is to protect the bottlenose dolphin, which the NMFS says has suffered historically high serious injury and death rates by getting caught in medium mesh gill nets.
Bottlenose dolphins are covered under the Marine Mammal Protection Act and have been the subject of a take reduction plan that included a temporary ban on nighttime fishing.
The permanent ban goes into effect Aug. 30.
