National

1.) Judge Brett Kavanaugh vowed in a new letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee that he will “not be intimidated” into withdrawing from consideration as Donald Trump’s nominee to the U.S. Supreme Court, saying the “smears” against him “debase the public discourse” and are “a threat to any man or woman who wishes to serve our country.”

2.) Seeking to tamp down on widespread reports that Rod Rosenstein would be fired today, the White House announced Monday the deputy attorney general will meet with President Trump upon his return from the meeting of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

3.) Attorneys for accused Russian agent Maria Butina insisted in a Saturday court filing that they followed court procedure in subpoenaing certain records from American University.

4.) During his debut speech a little more than a year ago at the U.N. General Assembly, President Donald Trump provoked audible gasps in the hall of diplomacy by threatening to “totally destroy” North Korea. What a difference a year makes.

Regional

6.) U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter, the San Diego-area congressman facing charges of misusing campaign money, won his bid Monday to postpone his trial until after the midterm elections in November.

7.) Hours into a hearing that will determine the prison sentence of convicted former comedian Bill Cosby, a judge said this afternoon that proceedings will likely stretch into Tuesday.

8.) U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz and challenger Rep. Beto O’Rourke heatedly clashed Friday evening in their first debate, highlighting their differences on domestic issues in a surprisingly dead heat midterm race in traditionally red Texas.

9.) California ushered in a new era for criminal justice in August when Governor Jerry Brown signed into law a bill that eliminates money bail as a way of keeping pretrial defendants being bars. On Friday, the Judicial Council met to hash out how the courts will actually put it into practice.

Science

10.) The active ingredient in popular weed killer Roundup may indirectly kill honey bees, according to a study published Monday that indicates the herbicide alters the balance of bacteria in the digestive tract of bees and makes them more prone to fatal infections.

11.)  The 417 parks that comprise the National Park system are particularly susceptible to the harmful effects of climate change, according to a study published Monday.

International

12.) A humanitarian rescue group that has been in a public fight with Italy’s new anti-immigrant government over its work rescuing asylum-seekers in the Mediterranean says the Italian government has pressured Panama to cancel its ship’s registration.
