OAKLAND, Calif. (CN) - A Nigerian man was sentenced to six months in jail and five years probation, and was ordered to pay $10,000 in restitution for smuggling four leopard skins into the United States.
Moses Oladele Adeyemo pleaded guilty in July to smuggling and other wildlife violations under the Lacey Act after he hid four leopard skins in three naugahyde bags and smuggled them from Lagos, Nigeria.
Customs officers at the San Francisco International Airport found the concealed leopard skins in May 2001, the regional U.S. Attorney's Office reported. Adeyemo told authorities that he never applied for a permit to export or import the skins, and had not declared them on a U.S. Fish and Wildlife form, as required by law.
Adeyemo admitted to having smuggled other wildlife items in September 2007, including large cat teeth.
