Nick Divito, a long-time reporter for Courthouse News, died last week. He was 42.

A talented writer and warm person, Nick wrote hundreds of news stories during his 14 years of work with us. He worked for Courthouse News first in New York, then moved to Las Vegas. He later returned to New York, where he covered the federal court in the Eastern District of New York.

Nick was a stalwart and disciplined reporter who ably helped this news service in litigation over access to public documents, by preparing a declaration on the excellent traditional access provided to news reporters in the Eastern District of New York and in Brooklyn’s trial court, Kings County Supreme Court.

Professional to the core, Nick worked up to the day of his death and submitted a well-written story published on March 8. The story concerned a Ukrainian man living in Queens who has been charged with funneling sophisticated weapons-grade military equipment back to his native country.

Nick had long struggled with liver problems and ultimately succumbed on Wednesday night in New York.

Along with his acumen as a journalist, Nick carried a deeply human touch and was extremely well liked by those he worked with, his fellow reporters as well as the court workers he saw every work day.

CNS Western Bureau Chief Chris Marshall recounts the first time he met Nick:

"I'll never forget meeting Nick years ago before he moved back to New York. He was sweating profusely, his shirt untucked, face full of stubble, like journalists of old. 'Hot enough for ya?' he boomed as he stuck out his hand, his gruff voice and appearance incongruous in downtown Las Vegas. We shouted our way past the homeless people and the faded casinos to the court, and through every (usually friendly) conversation we had since.

"Nick brought all his energy and passion to everything he did, and he had enough of both for an entire newsroom. He is dearly missed."
