NFL Star Says New Bosses Are Racist

STOCKTON, CALIF. (CN) - Former NFL linebacker Michael Merriweather claims that in his new career as an insurance agent, his bosses at New York Life Insurance Co., defamed and racially harassed him, repeatedly taunted him by calling him by the names of other black athletes who have had criminal problems, denied him resources and opportunities, and retaliated for his complaints by suspending him and threatening to fire him.

Merriweather says only 4 to 5 of the 110 New York Life agents in Stockton are black, and he claims much of the racist behavior originated from, and was spread by, that office's general manager, defendant Roland Ghazel.

Merriweather is represented by Angela Alioto of San Francisco.
